An Unforgettable Encounter with Shigeyama Sennojō: A Lively Journey into the Art of Kyōgen at the French International School Kyoto

We had the immense privilege of welcoming Mr. Shigeyama Sennojō, a renowned kyōgen actor, a comic form of traditional Japanese theatre. This exceptional encounter was offered to the students together with their Japanese teacher, Ms. Pichard, as part of a dynamic cultural discovery. A descendant of the famous Shigeyama family, Mr. Shigeyama represents the fourteenth generation in a lineage of artists dedicated to this refined discipline, which is listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
With great generosity, Mr. Shigeyama offered our students a demonstration full of life and expression. He first illustrated the emotional richness of kyōgen through laughter and sadness, bringing characters to life with precise gestures and a surprisingly powerful voice. He then performed symbolic movements such as stone throwing, as well as a comical scene of someone drinking sake with a fan. He introduced the children to the typical postures and movements of kyōgen, and finally embodied various animals – the horse, the fox, the cow, the bird – to the amazement of his young audience.
The students participated enthusiastically, imitating gestures, sounds, and movements throughout the session. They then asked many questions, eager to learn more, and Mr. Shigeyama answered them with cheerful warmth. Faces were beaming at the end of this unique experience, which will long remain in their memories.
We warmly thank Mr. Shigeyama for this moment of sharing and discovery, where Japanese culture came alive for the children with poetry and humour.
We also extend our sincere thanks to Ms. Debayles, thanks to whom this encounter was made possible.
