Ms. Doco, our PRIO, is expanding the “Focus on Guidance” program by launching a new format: the “Guidance Meetings.” Building on the collective sessions that introduced students to a variety of pathways, these meetings offer a complementary approach in small groups with a single guest, encouraging deeper discussion and greater interaction.

On Tuesday, December 9, Mr. Morioka Zentaro, a master potter based in Kyoto, also known as “Kasho,” inaugurated this new format.

Heir to an ancestral craft passed down for more than a century, Mr. Morioka represents the fourth generation at the head of Kashogama, a Kyō-yaki ceramic workshop founded in 1914. Immersed in the family business from an early age, he refined his skills through specialized training and an apprenticeship with his father. His career has led him to explore and develop unique creations, both in Japan and internationally. His workshop also produces bespoke pieces for prestigious establishments such as The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto.

A lively and participatory meeting
Mr. Morioka immediately captured the students’ attention by presenting his profession through a highly dynamic approach. To break the ice, he began with a playful game of “2 truths and 1 lie” about his daily life as a potter, inviting participants to identify the false statement with curiosity and good humor. Three emblematic objects brought by Mr. Morioka then sparked discussion. Divided into groups, the students engaged in a genuine inquiry to uncover the secrets of each piece, exploring the creative process, bold technical choices, and a distinctive artistic approach.

The interaction intensified with a “speed questioning” session. Still working in teams and within a limited time, students had to ask as many questions as possible to reconstruct Mr. Morioka’s career path and résumé. This fast-paced exercise sharpened their active listening skills, initiative, and ability to synthesize information. To conclude this immersion, multiple-choice questions were used to check overall understanding and recap the key points discussed. The exchanges were intense and enriching.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Morioka for his presence, generosity, and the valuable time he devoted to sharing his experience and passion with our students. He also took the time to continue talking with them after the session.

The next Guidance Meeting will take place on Thursday, December 11, featuring Mr. Peter Haazs, an innovative entrepreneur in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
